I sit on Acid

Playing at the Cleveland Cinematheque this weekend…

From the Tsars to the Stars
USSR, 1962, Gennadi Kazansky, Vladimir Chebotarev
This hugely popular Soviet fantasy film (65 million admissions in 1962; the equivalent of 520 million 2006 U.S. boxoffice dollars) is an enchanting hybrid of The Creature from the Black Lagoon and The Little Mermaid. It tells of a mutant with gills who rescues a beautiful fisherman’s daughter from sharks, falls in love with her, then desires to live on land. Shot in color in Cuba, the movie offers the disorienting spectacle of Russian actors in brownface amid lush tropical greenery and Latin songs and dances. Subtitles. 35mm. 95 min.

I did not see The Amphibian Man. It would have been fun.

I haven’t been to any movies lately but will get back on track soon. Pan’s Labyrinth is on the list.
