Movie Review – Star Wars: The Clone Wars

Posted by ebonshard on September 25, 2008

Star Wars: The Clone Wars is an animated chapter of the Star Wars saga.

This delightful creation garners an 8.

I was delighted to find out that this animated feature was not merely a copy of the original Attack of the Clones movie, but set in the future with its own story line. As usual, Generals Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker are in the middle of lopsided battle against the droid army on a faraway planet with little hope of reinforcements. The only help that arrives is Ahsoka Tano, Anakin’s new padawan learner. Of course, Anakin never trained another jedi in the original time line. This seems to have been an opportunity for George Lucas to throw in another Jar Jar Binks kind of character. She is disrespectful for a jedi and calls Anakin, “Sky Guy.” What? Her character is pretty cool when not being vapid and annoying. Oh, well.

Someone (Count Dooku perhaps?) has kidnapped Jabba the Hut’s son. Since the Huts control travel through the outer systems, this is a great opportunity for the jedi to rescue the missing child and gain access to the vital routes through the outer systems. The plot is pretty reasonable although the dialogue is pretty weak. What do you expect from a Star Wars movie anyway?

However, the visual aspects of the film were outstanding. The animation was excellent as well as the camera angles. A lot of cool things can be done with animation. It was beautiful to watch especially the battle scenes. This is certainly one to see in the theater to get the true feel and magnitude of the battle scenes. It’s just too bad that the other aspects of the movie were neglected.

It was nice to here some familiar voices: Samuel L. Jackson (Mace Windu), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO) and Christopher Lee (Count Dooku).

  1. I agree with you about the animation and camera angles.

The movie was pretty good. It should have been three episodes instead though IMO. The series is better.

Here is my take on the whole first season (with pics) if you are interested:
