It started a few years ago, but it keeps coming back….Troll Lord Games :: View topic – C&C Middle Earth. One could use a lot of the material for adapting any game to Middle Earth….

The Guild Companion

Posted by Adaen of Bridgewater on November 3, 2009

In my email today, I got my monthly notification that The Guild Companion is out. For those of you who are unfamiliar with it, the Guild Companion is a free online publication that supports Rolemaster, HARP, MERP, and Spacemaster (all Iron Crown Enterprises products). Though submissions have been low for some time now, they keep chugging along. For a free, unaffiliated publication, I think they do rather well. If you’ve ever had any interest in those games, take a look. Lately, I’ve felt a little nostalgic for my Rolemaster/MERP days so I’m going to flip through the latest installment (#129) during my lunch.

Greetings from the Guild Companion,

The November issue (#129) is now available at http://www.guildcompanion.com

In this month’s issue, Dan Henry’s epic work on analysing the social
implications of Spell Law concludes with a look at Evil Mentalism,
plus we have two “alien” races in Rolemaster terms and new Bardic
items, plus musings from the Editor on Something Wicked and other

Best wishes,

Dr Nicholas HM Caldwell, CEng CITP MBCS FRMS
General Editor for The Guild Companion
Author: Mentalism Companion, GURPS Age of Napoleon, Construct
Companion, College of Magics, HARP Sci Fi

RPG System Design: Hero Point Mechanics

Posted by Adaen of Bridgewater on November 1, 2009

I was reading a little theory on John Kim’s page and came across this article: RPG System Design: Hero Point Mechanics. It is really a great discussion of the topic and covers some really good ground. I mean, we used “Fate Points” in Rolemaster (and other sufficiently random systems) to mitigate “unfortunately random character death”, but we didn’t really think about all the possible ways to implement these buggers way back then….over time, they’ve really come into their own.

Its been several years since Brian Gleichman departed the net. I thought he’d be back by now.

Brian was at one point quite active in the rpg online community and posted quite prolifically on The Forge, rpg.net, and other online fora. And then, quite suddenly, he announced his intent to withdrawal from net and remove any online presence “to attack”.

To be sure, his style of play and his way of looking at games was not typical and he often was at odds with others. He did have a sharp tongue, but also a sharp wit to back it up. Whether or not his feeling of being “attacked” or not was justified, I don’t know. I wasn’t involved in direct discussions with him.

But I did appreciate his positions, especially given his gaming goals. As he states in the designer notes of Age of Heroes, “requiring some roleplaying in my wargame”.

At one point in my gaming career, I was decidedly in the same camp. I’ve since drifted into what some might term as more “narrativism”-based goals. Whatever. I miss Gleichman’s perspective.

When he left, I said to myself, “he’ll be back…no one as passionate as him can stay away from this stuff.” But alas, he has not returned….and its been years now. I tried to email him a while back, but all the addresses that I have are bouncing. If someone does still have contact with him, please let me know. And Brian, if you are reading this…isn’t it time to come back to the table?

Big Time Game Developer

Posted by Adaen of Bridgewater on April 4, 2007

Big Time Game Designer

When Damianov said he was adding me to his blogroll on his Voyages in Eternity blog site, I had no idea I’d be put in a place of such prominence.

There I am between Chaosium, Inc. (RuneQuest, Call of Cthulhu, BRP, Stormbringer, Hawkmoon, etc.) and Iron Crown Enterprises (Rolemaster, Spacemaster, MERP, HARP, etc.), both of which have 25+ years designing games. I guess I’ve finally arrived. My day is here….

Look out, all you game designing choads, there’s another big dog on the blog…andThe HAG this time there’s a bitch…er, a HAG involved.

In a seemingly unrelated item, I have also taken the Barrowdowns Lord of the Rings Personality Quiz with the following result:

 The Barrow-Downs
Lord of the Rings
Personality Test

Based on your answers, you are most like

You were also very much like

It looks like I pretty much rule. I’m most like the rightful heir of Numenorean (aka Atlantean) Royalty. Ties right in to my master plan:

Phase I – Collect the world’s underpants, Phase III – World Domination.

 I rule.

Or not. Good night to all.
