Boardgames are Officially Cool

Posted by Adaen of Bridgewater on March 1, 2016

Here’s an interesting article on the rise of the board game in recent times. Settlers of Catan is the big draw with my minions these days, so who am I to argue?

It’s Official, Everyone: Board Games Are Cool Now

Two guys playing Luchador at the London Gaming Market. Photo by Ashton HertzGaming is so close to being fully immersive. Facial recognition software is almost at the point where you can scan your face and render 3D versions of yourself that don’t look like disfigured Marvel villains. Virtual reality headsets—once they’ve sorted out the fact they currently make you feel a bit sick—are nearly able to drop players into the thick of it. Gesture control tech isn’t far off when it comes to characters emulating the movements of players. Humans are almost one with the machine.

So, at first, it strikes me as odd that we’re apparently in the midst of widespread board game revivalism. Why would people be so enthralled with stationary bits of plastic and card when they have all these expansive interactive worlds accessible to them?

“Without a doubt, we are in the middle of the golden age of board games,” says Nick Meenachan, founder of the YouTube channel Board Game Brawl. (more)

‘D&D’ Movie Aims For ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Meets ‘Lord of the Rings’

d-and-d

Warner Bros.’ “Dungeons & Dragons” live-action movie may not be the straightforward fantasy-adventure some game enthusiasts were expecting.

“This new ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ will be a ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’-tone movie in a Tolkien-like universe,” producer Roy Lee tells Collider. “Because when you think of all the ‘Hobbit’ movies and ‘The Lord of the Rings,’ they have an earnestness to them, and to see something fun, a ‘Raiders’ romp inside that world, I feel is something the audience has not seen before.”

Of course, after 2000’s “Dungeons & Dragons” and two direct-to-DVD sequel, most fans will probably be happy if the new film comes close to “‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ meets ‘TheLord of the Rings.’”

It’s been nearly three years since Warner Bros. acquired the film rights to the venerable role-playing game and tapped David Leslie Johnson (“Wrath of the Titans”) to write, but Roy is confident the studio is keen to mine the property for a franchise.

“I think it will really be moving forward quickly, and I don’t anticipate it not getting greenlit this year, mostly because Warner Bros. has DC now, and LEGO, and the ‘Harry Potter’ universe that’s being cultivated as their franchises,” he said. “I believe they see ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ as something that could be cultivated as a multi-universe movie where there will be spinoffs from the first movie being in ‘Forgotten Realms’ and subsequent movies being in different worlds.”
